Sneaky Google

First let me say I like google, I love google. lol ha ha I am sucking up to them because they are helping me become financially independent, as I have always - well ok not always - but for a long time dreamed of being. Actually, I haven't just dreamed of it, I have been working on it since I was about 12 or so I'd say.

Anyhow, if anyone at Google ever reads this, please stop the sneaky stuff.

Like putting image ads on my website which confuse my site visitors, and even me!

You guys are making heaps of money. You are one of the richest start ups in history. Why do you feel so desperate as to have to try the sneaky tactics? Is it your unmet emotional needs? I am guessing it is.

I often tell people of a movie I saw, it is called Sabrina. As I recall it goes like this. A young Amerian girl, or let's say a girl raised, inculturated or indoctrinated in the USA, goes to Paris. She comes back a changed woman.

Someone asks her what the difference is between American and France. She said "They are the same. Except the French know when to stop working."

I believe the USA is out of balance - too much focus on money, for one thing. And this is an example. It is sad to me to see Google stoop this low.

They already trick people with their very, very subtle background color scheme on the ads they place at the top of searches.

But first I want to tell this story and show this screen shot

Sneaky Google - My Matucana Page

Today my partner and I felt very suspicious when we saw a picture of a mountain appearing on my website. It looked a lot like one of the pictures I took in Peru when I was there, and it was on a page full of shots like mountains. My partner said, "That can't be a coincidence." Ah, and right she was.

The next time I loaded the page I got another image, similar to another picture. So I checked googl to ee what I could find about this. Here is what I found on the New York Times

Gmail will begin allowing advertisers to use images. For example, an e-mailed offer for a ski package showing a skier on the slopes could be accompanied by an ad on the right side of the screen, showing a competing offer, replete with another skier coming down another slope.

Mr. Gawley said the image used in the ad would be static, not animated, and would be used only in cases where the e-mail message itself showed images.

Here is the second image ad

Here is another image which is really an ad

Today when we searched "sneaky google" - in quotes - we found 14,400 results Nov 26, 2011
Here is an example of the ads at the top. In this image you can see the pink background pretty well, but on my laptop it is often hard to make it out. Also, the tiny "Ad" in the corner is very easy to miss, deliberately so.

The fact they have ads on the right can confuse or mislead people because they may think "Oh, the ads are on the right, so what is in the left column will be actual search results."

I suggest just put all the ads on the right. I don't think many users want to see ads at the top of their search results. Only the advertisers want this and Google. This reminds me of the 99% thing I heard RE the Occupy Wall Street movement. Probaly 99 percent of the people don't want this. So please, Google, listen to us, not just to your advertisers and sales department.
