Democracy

Till now haven't had one page dedicated to democracy - whatever that means... I feel sad, cynical and disillusioned as I write this.

*sigh

A Problem With Majority Rule

A basic problem with the idea of majority rule is that the majority doesn't know what you need and therefore doesn't know what is best for you.

What if the majority are wrong?

-

I thought of this question again when I saw a lot of smoke coming from outsde a Chinese temple in Penang, Malaysia. They were burning a lot of insense. It looked like a building was on fire.

I guess they believe that burning the incense will keep the "evil" spirits away.

So what if the majority of the people in China believe this... but they are wrong?

It is easier for those of us not from China to think of burning incense as a silly superstition than it is for us to think of our own traditions and religious practices as silly superstitions. And easier for us to think the Chinese beliefs are simply wrong.

But what if our own beliefs are wrong? What if what we were all taught as children is wrong?

Then does it make sense to let the majority of people, who all believe the wrong thing, make decisions and then impose those on the rest of us?

Here is one...

The majority used to believe that the world was flat, but no one holds that belief now.

I no longer believe in democracy.

Once it said there were over 7.000 results, but when I tried different pages the number quickly went down. Then I finally got this when I told it to show all results (ie not omitting similar results)

Quotes

Sometimes the majority only means that all the fools are on the same side.

-

A minority is in a very awkward position. The individuals in it can't afford to be just as good as the individuals in the majority. If they hope to convert the majority they have to be much better; and the smaller the minority, the better they have to be. They have to think better. They have to know more. They have to write better. They have to have handle controversy better. Above all, they have to have far more courage. And they have to be infinitely patient.

15 Day Law In Thailand

The Majority of Who?

The majority of travellers did not and would not vote for a 15 day limit to visas in Thailand.

The majority of slaves would not vote to be slaves.

Those in power decide who the "majority" are. In other words, they decide who votes.

The majority of the people in the world don't want war, but yet we have wars.

On a bus in Thailand. Some singing comedy show is on. Very loud. What if the majority wants this kind of distraction/entertainment? What if there are one or two people who want to think, or to have some peace and quiet?

I am being kiled by the majorty of people in this world.

Noise pollution.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying

Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on dinner.

This can be shortened to "Democracy is 2 wolves and 1 sheep voting on dinner."

Thomas Jefferson talked about how people would be happy if they would be able to "prevent the government from wasting the labours of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them.." (Found on many sites)
