EQI.org Home | Emotional Literacy I Feel Scared
When my partner was still living at home she was riding in the car with her family. Her father was driving. It was obvious to everyone in the car he was getting too sleepy to drive. Everyone was trying to convince him to pull over and let their mother drive. But he refused. Then my partner realized that no one was expressing their feelings with feeling words. Instead they were giving him orders and using the imperative form of verbs by saying things like, "Dad, just let mom drive!" "Dad, pull over!" They were also verbally attacking him with exclamations like, "You are going to kill us all." My partner then decided to try something she had learned from EQI.org. She simply said, "I feel scared." To her, and everyone else's surprise, her father pulled over and let the mother drive the rest of the way home.
