EQI.org Home | Main Page on Punishment Dolphins and Students Have you ever wondered how they train dolphins to jump through the hoops high above the water? Well, here is how they do it. When they first put a dolphin in captivity they put a rope down in the water. Then, each time the dophin happens to swim over the rope as it is swimming around, they throw in some food. Since dolphins are smart, they learn quickly. Then the trainers simply raise the rope little by little until it is out of the water. The dolphins are not punished. The dolphins are not threatened. Compare this to a typical school environment. Of course there are lots of rewards. But there are also threats and punishments. This makes one wonder if we are actually treating dolphins better than students. S. Hein See also Dolphins and Teachers |
