Carnival

Here is a journal entry from Jan 7, 2006

Laura came up and said that some kids tried to throw water on her. It is going to be "Carnival" soon here. Technically it is supposed to be in February but people start it early. It is the tradition during Carnival to throw water baloons at people, pour water onto them from second story windows, etc. I have a lot to say about this, but right now I will just say I hate it. It is especially males who attack the females, the more the females scream no, the more the males seem to enjoy it. Sometimes it is four or five males chasing a single female, or holding her while the others throw water or even paint on her. It reminds of gang rape and disgusts me thoroughly. It is another hypocrisy in a country where there is so much lip service about respect.

Study Free!

EIGER – supposedly it is an NGO where people can study for "free". But then you find out that you have to pay 100 soles for the registration and 25 soles for the book. And a lot of private institutes charge about the same thing, or only a little more. It is amazing to me that the people accept this kind of thing and don't get them charged with false advertising, or boycott the place or something. They don't boycott it because it is still a pretty good price. But it sure the hell isn't free!

By the way I am sitting in one of their offices now waiting to see if they are going to let me visit the English classes! lol If they kick me out, oh well!

Trying to figure things out

There have been so many times that I have tried to figure things out in Peru and failed, that I have come to the conclusion it is often not worth trying to figure something out. It is so hard to understand why Peruvians do what they do or how things work or why they don't work. And if you ask them you get answers which make no sense. For a person who likes to understand things it is very frustrating.

- My combi. The wiring. The emergency brakes.

- The two water tanks and two water pumps in Chiclyao at the Hostal Mauri.

- Why the hot water turns cold in the shower when you turn on the cold water in the sink. (see
