Is Home A Safe Place?

While living in South America for 4 years it became painfully obvious that

A) It is the norm for parents to hit their children and teens and

B) It is also the norm for parent to force their children and teens to stay home much more than in Western countries.

I formed a hypothesis that children and teens were actually safer outside of their homes than inside, so to test it I started asking both children and teens two questions. The first was:

- How many times have you been hit outside your home? The answer was usually zero.

Then I asked:

- How many times have you been hit at home? The answer to this question was often something like, "More times than I can remember."

If we were to extend this kind of survey to included verbal and emotional abuse, I have no doubt that we would find the majority of emotional abuse also occurs at home - the place so many people believe, pretend, and insist is "a safe place."
