A little help with emotional literacy for Rob

Excerpt from an April 2005 note to Rob about the design of his EI Consortium website and other comments. (Edited to take out the swearing)

Hi Rob,

Your EI Consortium site is pretty cheezy. Here are a few tips on how to make it look less amateurish. Right now it still looks like it is being created by a highschool kid who is just learning web design and is trying out all the new programming gadgets.

Ok, first, get rid of these stupid things.

............ .............. .............. .............

They are a little annoying and make you look like you are desperate to get attention. They also make you look like a used car salesman. Take a look at how I do my new items. People can go there to see what is new and they don't have to have some stupid thing flashing at them.

I have an idea. You let me know what you think makes me and the field look bad and I will do the same for you. This way we can still be pals. No hard feelings. Criticism is good. That is pretty much what David Caruso says. Here is a quote from his article for your site.

At the same time, this field, perhaps more than any other contemporary field of psychology, desperately needs the insights and critiques of skilled researchers. The contributions of debunkers such as Gerry Matthews, Richard Roberts, Adrian Furnham, and others have been hard-hitting, with a message that is often difficult to listen to. Yet, listen we must. (http://eqi.org/caruso4.htm)

But I guess I am not what you and David would call a "skilled researcher." So I guess my criticisms can be ignored.

Thinking of "criticism is good" reminds me of the old Arby's commercial. It said, "Different is good." What do you think? Do you agree with that? Or do you want everyone to be like you and Dan? Or maybe you are not old enough to remember the commercial. But at any rate, I would ask you, in the future, to not do so much stuff behind my back. Have the integrity to say what you have to say publicly and let me have a chance to defend and explain myself at least. And put my replies on your site.

I don't think you really believe I am a danger to teenagers. I think you have read enough of my writing to know that you are deliberately misleading people. I guess you learned that from Goleman, too. You guys are both pretty good at misleading people.

By the way, do you have Alexa? If not, you can download it and try it out. It is kind of interesting. It has site statistics. It says the time it takes for your site to load is "very slow". That is cuz you have too much graphic crap on your site. You are trying too hard to sell stuff. Like all the books which you get a kickback from Amazon on. Yeah, I sell books too but I don't promote them with graphics and I don't have them on my home page. And everyone at the eiconsortium seems to be living pretty well already so I don't see why you have to try so hard to make money. And how much does it cost to be an organizational member of Dan's little "consortium"? I read once but I have forgotten. Two thousand dollars or something? Can you let me know? I would look on your site but I don't have Internet access right now and also I suspect you don't have the actual prices on there anymore cuz it makes you all look pretty greedy.

Anyhow, here is what Alexa says about your site:

Speed:  Very Slow (85% of sites are faster), Avg Load Time: 4.0 Seconds (reference)

For my site it says:

Speed:  Fast (78% of sites are slower), Avg Load Time: .9 Seconds

As of today it says your site is ranked around 278,000 and mine was 214,000. But it looks like yours is moving up and mine is moving down. So you can feel encouraged. A little competition is a healthy thing, don't you think? As long as it is friendly, of course, and people both play by the same rules. But I guess we have a couple problems there. Oh well, maybe we can work on it. I am really not that bad of guy. I just get pissed off sometimes and swear a lot and get sarcastic and say a few caustic things. But if you show me you are actually a real person and not some kind of robot or Dan Goleman wannabe or something, then I can forgive you, apologize and move on. Like I said before though, I am not going to be holding my breath.

Questions for Rob about his site

I'm feeling puzzled, and a bit cynical, about your links page. At the top of the page you say:

For additional information on the topic of emotional intelligence see the following links.

Then I see something this link http://mindlife.org But when I followed the link, I didn't see any additional information on the "topic of emotional intelligence". So I did a site search like this

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.mindandlife.org+%22emotional+intelligence%22&btnG=Google+Search

and all I got was this....

Could you explain why you have that site on your links page? I am guessing they are friends of Dan since he is so into Buddhism and the Dalai Lama and all. By the way, I've been to Thailand. A Buddhist country. And I wasn't too impressed. I've never seen so many prostitutes anywhere else in the world. And that is just one of the many things which didn't impress me about the country. Did you know they make all the teenage girls cut their hair so it doesn't touch their shoulders? I am guessing you didn't. I am guessing you haven't traveled much, or if you have you haven't visited many highschools or any other kind of schools in other countries. I'm guessing you don't really know much about what is happening in the rest of the world. Correct me if I am wrong please. Unlike on your site, where money seems to be the only thing that matters, the truth does matter a little to me. I don't want to misrepresent you, Rob. I think the truth alone makes you look pretty bad.

And I know why you have the EQ Parenting link on there. It's because Maurice Elias teaches at Rutgers. But have you even read his book? Can you honestly say it has anything to do with emotional intelligence? And I see you have Jack Mayer's site on your links. That's really "open minded" of you, but why not David Caruso's? Hell, he's even a member of your little consortium. Maybe you don't have the link handy, so here it is. http://emotionaliq.org

Don't bother writing to thank me. It's my pleasure.

A little help with emotional literacy for Rob

Hi again Rob,

Here is a little more free help for you and your site. You might want to review this sentence. It is from your site.

If you feel that you meet the criteria listed below and are interested in being considered for individual membership...

This is what I would say is an example of what is NOT emotional literacy.

For more info. you can read the section on "Developing your emotional literacy" from my emotional literacy pages
